The global market of vodka
In the last 300 years, the global spirits market was dominated by whiskey, which is the most popular alcoholic beverage in the world. but the trend reverses and vodka sales catch up those of whiskey.
It is anticipated that by 2018, vodka will exceed whiskey in terms of consumption in the world. No other products could compete with whiskey in terms of exports. There were attempts to promote tequila as a rival of whiskey, but it did not work long. Vodka is the only drink able to do so.
Marketing is the crux of the market vodka. The number of brands is estimated at nearly 5,000 in the world competing for favor with the consumer. The historical brands in Eastern Europe are playing the card of the origin and authenticity: Sobieski, Wyborowa and Zubrowka display their Polish origin, Stolichnaya and Russian Standard their Russian affiliation.
Others, like Poliakov, Smirnoff and Absolut rely on a younger, trendier image. Brands marketed flavored vodka for that audience. Vodka’s success is due to a very neutral taste and an excellent adaptation to different cocktails.
